Cloudinary is a SaaS media platform, founded in 2012, that started as a developer API for uploading, transforming and delivering images and video through URLs and a CDN. Its digital asset management product, Cloudinary Assets (centred on the Media Library), sits on the same storage, metadata and delivery layer as those Image & Video APIs, so assets that marketing teams manage in the DAM are the same ones developers deliver with dynamic URLs. Assets comes in a free tier and an Enterprise tier aimed at large organisations. What sets Cloudinary apart from most DAM vendors is how much of it is exposed to developers: a large REST API surface with official OpenAPI schemas, SDKs for most languages, webhooks, embeddable widgets, five official MCP servers, and AI agents for taxonomy, search, workflow and moderation.

Positioning

  • Cloudinary sells several products on top of one shared media pipeline, storage layer and CDN S2. Product pages describe Assets as "intelligent digital asset management" and "the only Agentic DAM system built for where content is going" S93 (vendor claim).
  • The DAM grew out of the developer platform. Cloudinary says it introduced its "API-first, AI-powered DAM" in 2018 S84. The docs stress that assets uploaded to the Media Library are the same assets developers reference in delivery URLs, so content does not have to be copied to a second system S42. The vendor pitches this as a headless / composable DAM for MACH stacks S2 S3.
  • Target audiences: marketing, creative and e-commerce teams in large organisations, served by Assets Enterprise S43; developers and product teams, served by the Image & Video APIs. Every API plan includes "Assets Free" capabilities S67. The vendor publishes solution pages for retail/e-commerce, media and entertainment, travel and hospitality, UGC, creative automation, 3D, and agentic commerce S2.
  • In 2023 Cloudinary launched Nexus, a free and paid AI DAM for SMBs and teams S92. Current docs and pricing only name Assets Free and Assets Enterprise S67. Unverified The Nexus brand no longer appears there; how Nexus maps to the current plans is Unknown.
  • Competitors: the vendor does not publish a list. Frontify's own comparison pages include Cloudinary alongside Bynder, Brandfolder, Aprimo and others (see Frontify overview).

Pricing & licensing

  • Two independent product lines with separate plans. A paid Image & Video API plan does not raise DAM limits above Assets Free, and buying Assets Enterprise does not upgrade the API tier S67.
  • Assets (DAM): Free ($0, 3 users, 1 product environment, "basic asset management for small teams") or Enterprise (custom price, custom user count) S67. No public Assets Enterprise price list. Many DAM features are labelled premium add-ons within Assets Enterprise ("availability depends on your account setup" and/or "incurs an additional cost"): Portals, Creative Approval, Visual Search, People Search, conditional metadata rules, transformation templates, commenting, access control, dynamic collections, Assets Reports, and the Adobe Creative Cloud Connector S58 S59 S50 S51 S45 S62 S61 S56 S65 S63 S74.
  • Media Library widget: Enterprise customers need an Assets plan, and every user who opens the Media Library needs a separate seat S27.
  • Image & Video APIs are billed in credits (1 credit = 1,000 transformations, or 1 GB of managed storage, or 1 GB of CDN bandwidth, or 500 s of SD / 250 s of HD video processing). Public tiers S67:

  • Enterprise-only items in the API comparison table include SSO via SAML 2.0, the Provisioning APIs, multi-CDN, custom SLA, upload acceleration, delivery logs and "AI-powered search". Custom CNAME domains and token/cookie-based authentication start at the Advanced plan S67.
  • The Free plan has no time limit. Overages trigger warnings, then partial and finally full account disabling if they are not fixed. Discounts exist for startups and non-profits. Cloudinary can also be bought through Heroku, AWS Marketplace and partners S67. Most add-ons have a free tier; paid add-on tiers require a paid plan S67.

Security & compliance

  • Certifications and attestations: SOC 2 Type II (reports by Deloitte covering Security, Availability, Privacy, Confidentiality and the HIPAA Security Rule) and ISO 14001 S80. The trust page also says Cloudinary is audited by "an independent and accredited certification body" for a systematic approach to managing sensitive information, and shows a certification-body seal S80. Unverified Third-party summaries call this ISO 27001, but the page text does not name the standard. Also listed: a Cloud Security Alliance CAIQ, GDPR and CCPA/CPRA compliance statements, and data transfers under the DPA, SCCs and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (including UK and Swiss extensions) S80. HIPAA, PCI and FedRAMP claims seen in third-party summaries were not confirmed on vendor pages: Unknown.
  • Availability: committed to 99.9% uptime, measured by a third party; public status page S80 S94. Custom SLAs are Enterprise-only S67.
  • Data residency: US by default; Enterprise customers can choose EEA storage and EU or AP API endpoints S80 S6. A subprocessor list is published S80.
  • SSO: SAML 2.0 login and SAML provisioning (users created or updated on first login from IdP attributes, including roles and groups), Enterprise only. The docs walk through Okta, AD FS and Google Workspace setups. SAML can be enforced for all users except Master Admins S54. SCIM: not documented (Unknown). Two-factor authentication can be enabled or required S43.
  • Access control: Roles and Permissions system with global, folder and collection roles assigned to users, groups or API keys. Custom roles are Enterprise-only. Rolled out to all free and self-serve accounts; the Enterprise rollout began in 2026 S55 S37. Policies are expressed in Cedar at the API level S18.
  • Privacy options: IP-address masking in logs for Enterprise customers on request S30. A feature restricting Cloudinary employee access was added in May 2026 S39. Since July 2024 Cloudinary has implemented the C2PA content-provenance standard S81.
  • Audit trail: Unverified no dedicated audit-log product was found. Asset version history, moderation history, webhook events for most asset changes, and Assets Reports (engagement, search, downloads) cover part of the need S15 S57 S63.
