MediaBeacon is an enterprise digital asset management (DAM) platform built around Adobe's XMP metadata model, a Solr-based search engine ("R3Search") and a server-side JavaScript workflow engine. It was created by the Minneapolis company MediaBeacon, Inc. (originally BrighTech, founded 1989) and has belonged to the packaging-software group Esko since March 2015; Esko itself moved from Danaher to the spin-off Veralto in September 2023. Esko sells MediaBeacon as a self-hosted (on-premise) installation or as a vendor-hosted "MediaBeacon Cloud", mainly to brand owners, retailers and CPG companies that pair it with Esko's packaging artwork tools (WebCenter). Its developer surface is a JSON REST API (v2), a server-side Workflow JavaScript API and a browser-side Client JS API, documented as JSDoc/Javadoc HTML; there is no OpenAPI file, no webhook system and no MCP server.

Positioning

  • Esko presents MediaBeacon as a metadata-driven enterprise DAM to "control assets" and manage creative workflow: taxonomy-based search, rights and role-based security, brand portals, Adobe Connector, approvals and support for 3D models and other rich formats S20.
  • Its distinctive angle since 2015 is the packaging supply chain: Esko bought it to extend its prepress/packaging software toward end-to-end workflows S29, then marketed MediaBeacon + WebCenter as one platform linking DAM to packaging artwork management (2016) and as an integrated packaging-and-marketing solution for brands (2017-05-11) S30 S31. The 24.11 release added presigned-URL transfer of objects from WebCenter to MediaBeacon S15.
  • Technical identity: XMP-native metadata (fields addressed by namespace URI), extensibility through JavaScript workflows (visual or code), and a self-hostable Java/Tomcat stack S9 S10 S3. Historically positioned on Adobe/XMP integration and standards S26 S42.
  • Target verticals listed on the former MediaBeacon site: food & beverage, CPG, retail & apparel, media & entertainment, public sector, pharmaceuticals, financial services S22.
  • Market perception: Real Story Group tracks it as "Esko/MediaBeacon" among its evaluated DAM vendors S42. Forrester (2018) called it a fit for product companies needing a scalable DAM with 3D asset support S32.
  • Product activity: the latest public version is 25.07 (release notes dated July 2025) S12 S7. MediaBeacon had sections in Esko's 24.07, 24.11 and 25.03 release posts, but none in the 25.11, 26.03 or 26.07 posts S14 S15 S16 S19 S17 S18, and no 25.11 or 26.x documentation was found S45 S46. The 25.07 API docs were rebuilt on 2026-05-18 S45. Unverified The release rhythm appears to have slowed after 25.07. Esko has published no end-of-life notice, and the product page is still live with a "discovery call" form S20.

Pricing & licensing

  • Quote-only; no prices or edition list published S20. Not public.
  • Two commercial models: vendor-hosted cloud and on-premise S20. The former MediaBeacon site described the cloud offer as a subscription (SaaS, monthly payments) as opposed to licences managed in-house S28 Unverified (2019 page).
  • Licence-driven features: connectors (Adobe, Microsoft) appear only when the licence includes them S9; Clarifai is a licensed package S8; published renditions on S3 need a renditions licence S1; SAML just-in-time account creation is capped by the licensed number of accounts S12. Sizing guidance uses "User Concurrency Pack" servers, which suggests capacity is tied to concurrent users S10 Unverified (inferred).
  • No free trial or public sandbox found; Esko offers a "discovery call" S20.

Security & compliance

  • Certifications: Esko states SOC 2 Type 2 (since 2022) and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 covering software development, cloud operations, global customer support and other functions S38; the Trust Center mentions annual SOC 2 audits and provides safeguard documents S37. Neither page names MediaBeacon or MediaBeacon Cloud, so whether the product is in scope is Unknown Unverified.
  • SSO / identity: login against the internal user base or an external identity provider (IdP); group membership and some metadata are synced from the IdP at login S8 S9. SAML with just-in-time account creation is referenced in the 25.07 release notes S12; Active Directory / LDAP authentication servers are supported S9. SSO is configured server-side (Control Panel app) S9. SCIM: Unknown (not mentioned).
  • Permissions: users belong to groups; each group has ACLs (access control lists) that define visible folders, forms and permission restrictions. There are three user types: Global Administrator, Group Administrator and General User S9.
  • Audit & metrics: history dialogs and a metrics schema record user actions (action, user, asset, old/new values, API-key user) S9.
  • Data residency, encryption, SLA: Not public for MediaBeacon Cloud.
