Scope: AEM Assets as a Cloud Service (Admin view + Assets view on one repository), Dynamic Media, Content Hub; 6.5 differences in the Overview. Many capabilities depend on the package (Assets Prime vs Ultimate), Dynamic Media add-ons (Prime/Ultimate) or a GenAI Rider; several 2026 items are Beta or Limited Availability (LA) S32 S33 S34 S37.

Ingestion & storage

  • Upload channels: browser upload (Admin view; Assets view also uploads whole folder trees) S31; AEM desktop app (nested folders from the file system) and Adobe Asset Link inside Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign S30; Bulk Import tool (admins) from Azure Blob Storage or Amazon S3 — with min/max size filters, Skip/Replace/Create Version modes, CSV metadata file, dry run, one-time or recurring schedules S47; Assets view bulk import also offers Google Cloud, Dropbox and OneDrive sources S30; APIs (direct binary upload, Import from URL, experimental OpenAPI upload) S17 S2 S3; external contributors via the Assets Sourcing portal (Beta/LA) S67 S37.
  • Architecture: binaries go directly to cloud blob storage (CDN-accelerated), then asset microservices generate renditions, extract metadata and text for indexing outside the AEM JVM; processing is configured with processing profiles plus optional post-processing workflows S44 S45 S17.
  • Formats: broad raster, RAW camera, vector, Adobe (PSD/PSB, AI, INDD), document, audio, video and 3D (GLB, OBJ, STL, USDZ ingest-only in Dynamic Media) support; metadata extraction fails above ~15 GB; PNG with IDAT chunk > 100 MB and some PSB files are not processed S46 S64.
  • File size: maximum upload size Unknown (not stated); Import from URL tested to 30 GB S2; Dynamic Media with OpenAPI video up to 50 GB / 2 h S21.
  • Versioning: on name clash users choose Replace, Create another version or Keep both; versions visible in the Timeline and revertible S47; API createVersion/replace flags S17.
  • Duplicate detection: SHA-1 based, disabled by default (performance), notifications for the first 100 duplicates to the AEM Inbox S58.
  • Soft delete: Assets view Trash with restore / permanent delete S31.

Metadata & taxonomy

  • Metadata schema forms (Admin view): per-folder and per-MIME-type forms; components Single Line Text, Multi Value Text, Number, Date, Dropdown, Standard Tags, Smart Tags, Hidden Field, references, Contextual Metadata; fields map to JCR properties (e.g. ./jcr:content/metadata/dc:title); mandatory fields per folder S51.
  • Metadata forms in Assets view for business-specific fields S30.
  • Taxonomy: AEM tag namespaces (hierarchical, multilingual titles) referenced in xcm:keywords with tag IDs and ancestors S2. Tags can also be managed by API: the experimental Tag Author API browses, creates (up to 100 per request, optionally as an async job), updates and deletes tags S113; maintenance release 28871 (October 2026) lists tagging APIs with async bulk tag creation and improved tag-based search S112.
  • Embedded metadata: XMP/IPTC/EXIF extracted on ingestion; metadata write-back exists but is disabled by default in the Cloud Service (enable the workflow launcher) S39 S46.
  • Bulk edit / import-export: CSV bulk metadata import and export S52; bulk metadata import via OpenAPI (experimental) S3. Release 28871 adds async metadata export through the Assets API and nested properties / arrays of objects in metadata import and export S112 (export endpoint not yet in the public specs on 2026-10-13 Unverified).
  • Brand Aware Metadata (BAM) (Beta): prompt library that generates custom metadata fields on upload/reprocess S37.

Search & discovery

  • Omnisearch full-text search across common metadata, filters/facets, saved searches, smart collections (saved queries), search ranking/boosting, custom predicates, visual "find similar" S50.
  • Assets view search: search-first UI, operators and wildcards; Contextual Search turns natural-language prompts into editable filters S30 S31.
  • AI Search (Content Hub, LA in 2026.9.0; also in Content Advisor): intent-based, multilingual, typo- and synonym-tolerant S37 S66.
  • Colour search: intelligent colour tags applied on ingestion S30.
  • Release 28871 search changes: relative date ranges in asset search queries, collection searches usable as smart-collection sources S112.
  • API search: FULLTEXT, HYBRID (keyword + semantic) and NATURAL_LANGUAGE modes; PDF-based similarity search S2.
  • Firefly fallback: generate an image with Adobe Firefly when a search returns nothing, then save it to the DAM S30.

AI capabilities

  • Smart Tags: applied by default on upload to images (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP, GIF…), text-based files (CSV, DOC/DOCX, HTML, PDF, PPT/PPTX, RTF, SRT…) and video (MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, FLV, WMV); confidence scores; tag moderation; custom training on a business taxonomy; folder-level opt-out per asset type S48. Known limits: no fine visual distinctions, tiny logos or abstract attributes S48.
  • AI-generated metadata: titles, descriptions and keywords (objects, scenes, emotions, brand logos), configurable, can be disabled per folder S49 S30.
  • AI bulk rename in Assets view (conversational prompts) S30.
  • Dynamic Media AI: Smart Crop (image and video), Smart Imaging, AI-generated video captions in 60+ languages (captions reviewable before publish) S30 S37.
  • Agents via AI Assistant: Discovery Agent, Content Optimization Agent (renditions, background changes, sharpening), Governance Agent (metadata, accessibility, brand compliance); agentic capabilities GA in Adobe CX Enterprise Coworker (2026-09) S30 S37.
  • Generative creation: Adobe Express + Firefly inside Assets view and Content Hub (requires Express entitlements) S30 S35.
  • Content Credentials (C2PA) support S30; release 28871 adds a Content Credentials indicator in the Assets Admin view UI (ASSETS-77247; display details not described) S112.
  • Governance of AI: some features require a GenAI Rider S66; smart tagging opt-out per folder S48; AI data-use terms: Not public in the pages read.

Organization

  • Folders (hierarchical, with folder-level processing profiles and metadata schemas) S45 S51.
  • Collections: static references, smart (saved-search) collections, nested collections, bulk collection metadata; Assets view collections can mix assets from any location S53 S30. Content Hub Smart Collections (LA) auto-add newly approved matching assets S37. Collections by API: create/list/items on the delivery OpenAPI S4; release 28871 adds collection item update, delete, search, smart collections and collection metadata through the Assets API S112.
  • Portals: Content Hub — approved assets in a flat hierarchy, configurable filters/fields/properties/banner, Express editing, insights; Multi-portal Content Hub in Beta S35 S37. Brand Portal — legacy, maintenance mode, not available with Prime/Ultimate for new customers S65.
  • My Workspace dashboard (Assets view) S31.

Workflow & collaboration

  • AEM workflow engine: post-processing workflows after microservice processing; many 6.5 DAM workflow steps are no longer supported S17.

  • Watermarking: PNG watermark via a System Watermarking Profile applied through processing profiles (scale 0.0–1.0) S57.
  • Permissions: Admin Console product profiles (Limited, Collaborator, Power, Administrators) mapped to AEM user groups/ACLs; only Administrators manage permissions on author content S32 S13.
  • Secure delivery: roles/groups as asset metadata (optionally time-boxed) restrict Dynamic Media with OpenAPI delivery; attribute-based access control (LA) S22 S37.
