Scope: the Nuxeo Platform LTS 2025 (current LTS, released 2025-03-31) with its built-in DAM document types and the add-ons on the Nuxeo Marketplace. Nuxeo is a configurable platform: many capabilities below are building blocks (document types, listeners, Automation chains, Studio configuration) or add-ons, not ready-made screens. Each item says which.

Ingestion & storage

  • Web UI upload: drag and drop into a workspace, or an Import tab that lets users fill metadata before the documents are created; dropping a file on an existing document replaces its main file S33.
  • Desktop: Nuxeo Drive syncs Nuxeo folders with a local folder; files moved into the synced folder are imported (open-source client, release 7.0.1 on 2026-09-17) S33 S30.
  • Cloud drives: Nuxeo Live Connect references files kept in Dropbox, Google Drive, Box or OneDrive as if they were stored in Nuxeo, with thumbnails, full text and conversions S33.
  • High-speed transfer: IBM Aspera connector for large media (requires an Aspera on Cloud subscription and S3 storage) S57.
  • API and bulk: batch upload API with resumable chunked upload S6; S3 direct upload to a transient bucket with temporary credentials S13; server-side importers (platform importer, CSV import, scan importer) as Marketplace packages S42. Hyland cites "high-speed bulk uploads" in LTS 2025 v3 S73.
  • Formats: images (JPG, PNG, GIF, PSD, AI…), video (AVI, MP4, WMV…), audio (MP3, WAV…), Office and PDF; full list on a dedicated page S33. Imported files are typed automatically: image MIME types become Picture documents, video/* becomes Video S32.
  • Maximum file size: Not public (no documented product limit; depends on the deployment and storage).
  • Versioning: major/minor versions with labels, automatic (policy-based) or manual; all versions can be viewed, restored or deleted S34. Versions keep their own tags S92.
  • Storage: binaries go to pluggable blob stores; packages exist for Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Storage S42. S3 options cover storage class, client- and server-side encryption, and direct download through short-lived presigned URLs (default 1 h) S13. A Cold Storage add-on is listed for LTS 2025 S42.

Metadata & taxonomy

  • Content model: everything is a document with a type, facets and schemas. Types, schemas and forms are defined in Nuxeo Studio (low-code) or XML extensions, and can be read at runtime through /api/v1/config/types|schemas|facets S3 S89. Hyland markets this as "the industry's most advanced metadata modeling" S63 (vendor claim).
  • DAM schemas: picture (picture views), image_metadata (EXIF), IPTC stored partly in Dublin Core, video (info, transcodings, storyboard) S32.
  • Embedded metadata: ExifTool-based extraction of EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP. Mapping is bidirectional by default: values read from the file, and edited fields written back into the file, unless the mapping is set read-only S37. On DAM, IPTC caption, copyright and source fill description, rights and source automatically S33.
  • Controlled vocabularies: directories (flat or hierarchical vocabularies, SQL/LDAP/MongoDB-backed) with full CRUD in the REST API S3.
  • Tags: free tagging with type-ahead suggestions, available to any user with read access S92.
  • Bulk edit: the Nuxeo Spreadsheet add-on edits a result set in a grid with copy-paste S34. Bulk actions can also run on a query via the API S7.
  • Compound assets: the Compound Documents add-on (beta, LTS 2021+) handles InDesign packages, 3D product designs, material files and Premiere/Avid projects as a parent with modifiable children; upload as a ZIP that a script unpacks into the structure S40.

Search & discovery

  • Engines: Elasticsearch (9), OpenSearch 1/2 and, since the Q1 2026 release, MongoDB Atlas Search as search back-ends S42 S75. LTS 2025 v3 added "independent search" (search deployable separately) S73.
  • UI searches: a dedicated Assets search (type, format, width, height…) with faceted aggregates and counts; a general search form on any metadata; quick search with highlighted matches; saved, shared and deletable searches S32 S35.
  • Query language: NXQL, an SQL-like language with LIKE/ILIKE, STARTSWITH on paths, ecm:fulltext, ancestor filters, list and complex properties S11. Highlights are available through the API S7.
  • Full text: binary text extraction feeds full-text search S11.
  • Visual / similarity search: Insight Deduplication finds images similar to existing ones (requires a Nuxeo Insight subscription) S38. Forrester singles out duplicate identification S76.
  • Natural-language search: no native NL search box documented. The Nuxeo MCP Server translates plain-English requests into NXQL for AI assistants S24, and Hyland Knowledge Discovery agents can query Nuxeo repositories through the Content Innovation Cloud S73.

AI capabilities

  • Nuxeo AI (core + extensions): a stream-based pipeline that sends new or changed images, videos, audio or extracted text to AI services and stores the results as tags or a facet. Extensions: AWS (Rekognition, Comprehend, Translate), Google Cloud, image quality S38 S42.
  • Nuxeo Insight: Hyland's trainable, "business-specific" AI that business users train without data scientists, predicting taxonomies for metadata enrichment and process automation; sold as a subscription S63 S77 S78.
  • Speech-to-text (Google Cloud) for audio and video: sample package, "no support provided" S48.
  • Hyland Content Innovation Cloud: Nuxeo content can be pushed to Knowledge Enrichment (multimodal classification, tagging, PII masking across 600+ file types) and queried by Knowledge Discovery agents, through the HxAI and Content Intelligence connectors S73 S49 S42.
  • Generative AI: a partner package from Maretha.io ("Nuxeo Generative AI", 2023) S42. No native generative features (asset generation, copy writing) documented.
  • Face recognition, OCR: OCR via a partner package (Oceane Consulting) and AWS Textract labs connector S42; face recognition Unknown.
  • AI governance / opt-out: AI processing is opt-in (packages and per-stream configuration flags, default false) S38. Data-use and training policy for Insight: Not public.

Organization

  • Folders and workspaces: a hierarchical repository (domains, workspaces, folders) with inherited permissions S36.
  • Collections: folder-like groupings that link to documents without moving them; private by default in personal workspaces, shareable by granting permissions S36. In LTS 2025 a collection holds at most 10,000 documents by default (configurable) S18.
  • Publication sections: documents can be published to sections; tags are copied to the published document S92.
  • Brand portal: no packaged brand portal. A sample "Nuxeo DAM Catalog Portal" sits in the DAM category (sandbox, no support) S43. The DAM workflow example ends with publication "to the brand portal" S34.
